The Sentinel Self

Project View
The Sentinel Self is an interactive artwork that explores the entanglements between human immune systems and environments increasingly polluted by microplastics. Built within a video game engine, the work takes the form of an evolving simulation in which hundreds of cell-like creatures interact within a vast aquatic, body-like ecosystem. The project draws on the concept of sentinel species —organisms whose sensitivity to environmental change helps scientists understand the health and vulnerability of ecosystems. Research on sentinel organisms in the oceans has revealed the widespread impact of microplastic pollution, and recent studies show that microplastics are also detectable within human bodies—in blood, organs, and even brain tissue. In this sense, humans themselves may be becoming sentinel species.

Becoming A Sentinel Species

Project View
Becoming a Sentinel Species is a science fiction film and research project, and a collaboration between Heather Leslie, Juan Garcia Vallejo and Sissel Marie Tonn. They were the recipient of the 2020 BAD awards. Becoming a Sentinel Species premiered the 11th of December 2020 at MU, Eindhoven.

The Intimate
Earthquake Archive

Project View
The Intimate Earthquake Archive is a sensory-tactile experience of man-made earthquakes rippling across your body, the same way the seismic waves moved across the land. A deep listening practice to explore how we are interconnected with the earth through extractive practices.
